For those of you who play in Fla. hobbs tournaments ...

Message from Tom Giffen re: field conditions from Irma

RHWS Facility update ... here is a look at the status of the facilities Roy Hobbs uses for the World Series:

1. PDC -- Ready for play as of September 29. No field damage. Tree issues including the big oak at the back of the clubhouse need to be removed. There was canopy damage over some for the bleachers, especially field 1. The forested area across the street from PDC was pretty much mangled.

2. Terry Park -- Facility is open for play except field 2, where there is sideline fence damage. Repairs are underway.

3. City of Palms Park: No field damage; however, CoP is currently closed due to significant damage to the roof over the first-base stands. Sections of that roof ended up on the field after the storm. Structural engineers are evaluating what needs to be done to secure the remaining structure so that the field can continue to be used. We anticipate CoP will be on line for the RHWS.

4. Centurylink sports complex: No field damage; minimal damage overall, mostly on softball complex side. Some dugout roof damage but minimal. This facility has been used as a staging area for recovery efforts, so little has been done on cleanup to this point. The Twins did not cancel instructional league in October, but have minimized it and probably will not play games this year, unless they hook up with Red Sox.

5. JetBlue: Sustained the most damage, but it was in the NE Eyewall of Irma, perhaps the worst place to be. Warning tracks on several fields were washed out and need to be replaced. Except for one field, all of the batter's eyes were significantly damaged and will have to be replaced. Those eyes are constructed in place and cannot be raised or lowered like at other facilities. Best bet is the we will play RHWS with no batter's eyes at JetBlue. There was some facia damage in the stadium, but it will not prohibit play there. We anticipate full use. Red Sox instructional league workouts will be held on 2 of the fields in the quad next month.

6. Charlotte County Sports Complex: No damage to fields. We potentially could use this complex this year if any Lee County fields become unavailable; and we may anyway in 53s-65s-75s week because of number of teams.

Overall, the Lee County facilities were very fortunate ... and when we look at the devastation in Puerto Rico from Maria, Oh My, our hearts go out to the island. We in SW Florida were incredibly fortunate with Irma by comparison.

That's it.
