Yankees of the 47 + League improved their record to 5-0 with weekend wins over the Marlins & Cougars behind the hitting of Steve Van Gelder and a host of other Yankees. Don't have the full stats yet. Ralph Caputo pitched 5 innings in the Marlins game and Art Gianakos pitched the final 2 innings. Art Gianakos pitched a complete game against a fiesty Cougars team who showed a no quit attitude. Things will get better in time Frank.
Thanks to Artie for his generous and encouraging words.
As everyone knows, not only are the Yankees a well-oiled hitting machine, knocking out single after single in our game with steely determination, but they invariably make the toughest plays in the field. Congratulations to them for the fine season they're putting together.
And, yes, it's been a bit difficult so far for the Cougars, but things are definitely looking up. We're finally starting to hit the ball, as we demonstrated by collecting about 10 base hits against tough Yankees pitching.
Individual mention goes to John Breen, who gutted-out a complete game despite several fielding lapses behind him. Brian Quinn had his second two-hit game in a row. And Frank Montagano finally located the sweet-spot on his bat with a two-rbi double over the center fielder's head. (If only he'd learn to not toot his own horn!)
