Giants 3, Highlanders 1

Jerry Solomon, on 2 days rest, tossed a 3-hitter to lead the Giants at FMS in a game called after the Highlanders batted in the top of the 6th.

Billy Smith smacked a deep SAC fly in the first and an RBI double in the third, and Jim Keegan roped an RBI triple before being paged to go to work. Carlos Llera had a hit, scored two runs and stole a base. Dan Maguire led off the game with a single to help jumpstart the Giants to a 2-0 lead in the first.

Great defense, anchored by Rob Malachowski at 3rd and our entire OF, helped the Giants improve to 3-4. Highlanders leadoff hitter, TJ Scorsone, led off the 4th with a single, but was gunned down by Marty at second trying to stretch it into a double. Then on a bleeder through the infield in the 6th, Carlos hustled in from RF and fired a strike to Mike Aiello at SS to nail the runner who overran 2nd.

Meanwhile, Jerry didn't allow a hit till the 4th, and finished with a complete-game, 3-hitter.

The Giants would have had a 4th run, but it was taken off the board because the Giants added a hitter to the bottom of the lineup in the second inning without informing the Highlanders, who challenged it. It was upheld by the umpires. With runners at 1st and 3rd and one out, the run scored as the added batter bounced out to first base. The 3rd out occurred on the play when the runner at first tried to move up to 3rd. Umpires made the right call in moving the runners back to first and third with an out recorded for the unannounced player.

John Kalinski was the tough-luck pitcher for the Highlanders. He gave up 7 hits in 5 innings.
