The A's took their third in a row over a tough Blue Jays team. The game started a little late because, on the most beautiful day of the year, the field was still a little wet in spots and the water had to be taken off. I'd like to thank all the guys, especially Don Wixon (who is hurt and not even playing), Wayne Newcomb and Ed Class, who helped make the field playable. Also, thanks to the umps for being patient with us. And yet more thanks to those guys again and the Blue Jays who stayed and helped leave the field in a 200% better condition than we found it.
Brian Kent, starting his second game for the A's did a great job mixing in a moving fastball with a huge breaking ball to keep the Blue Jays off balance. But, even though the A's scored in each of the first three inning to take a 6-0 lead, the Jays fought back taking every advantage in the fourth to get back in the game with 4 of their own. In the fifth, they scored again, highlighted by a tremendous piece of hitting by Mitchell who took a big breaking ball down and inside, turned on it and blasted it deep into left field for a triple. It was now 6-5.
The A's responded with 2 in the bottom of the 5th and 2 more in the 6th to get to the final score.
The A's were led by Kent 5 innings of great work and Kevin Moon's 2 inning, 5 strikeout save. Kent also had 2 singles, a double and 3 runs scored. Geo Schillinger had three hits from the leadoff spot. The A's catcher had a double, single, 3 RBI's and about 5 or 6 passed balls.
For the Blue Jays, Malone had 2 singles and Mitchell had his booming triple.
Ray - nice writeup. Congrats to the A's on the W and the all-around great effort and congrats to my Jays mates, especially Andy Sheen who pitched another good game and to Mitch for that monster triple. Brian Maiello looked good again in relief. Jays - we'll turn it back around - let's just keep playing hard. Ray - you caught a good game, as you always do. Both of your pitchers kept the ball down in the zone. If a couple of the lower ones got by - no big deal - especially after working your butt off to get the field ready. Thanks for making it happen.
