The Cougars came to New Scotland with winning on their minds. They carried a lively anticipation to get onto the field, play as a team and give the Black Sox more than they could handle. The first batter for the Sox worked a walk. Good sign for Sox but no Cougar heads were looking down. As the first pitch to the second batter reached Quinn's glove he quickly released the ball on a line to wipe out the runner on an attempted steal. You could almost hear the Cougars saying "We're here to play boys." After a flyout, a walk and a groundout by the Sox the Cougars were ready to take their turn at the plate. Hoin, pitching for the first time for the Sox, toed the rubber and retired the first batter. Next up, the Cougars starting pitcher Plew, was retired on a swinging third strike. Andros takes his place in the batter's box and promptly rockets a double to right center. The Cougars are ready to pounce. Turner hits a solid shot to left but it is corraled by Gary Fish to end the inning. The Sox managed to plate a run in the second and had another run cut down at the plate by the Cougar's 3rd baseman, Smith, on an over the shoulder catch in short left. He tumbles to the ground, regains his feet and fires home to nail the Sox runner at the plate. Again, the murmur amongst the Cougars must have been, "we're here to play boys." At the end of three the score was 1 to 0 Sox. Both Hoin and Plew had pitched well. The Cougars befell the same fate as the the first Sox batter did, that is being caught stealing in the second and again in the third inning by the Sox catcher Meyers. The Sox plated two in the top of the fourth, and in the bottom of the inning Foreman came in to pitch. Draves led off with a solid single, (I'm thinking these guys are here to play),only to be thrown out attempting to steal second by the rifle arm of Meyers. This was the turning point of the contest as Foreman struck out the next two batters. The Sox struck for 5 runs in the fifth and 3 in the sixth to close out the scoring. Foreman ended up with 6 strikeouts and his 4th win of the year. Combined, Hoin and Foreman allowed only 4 hits by the Cougars. Ramos, Hoin and Foreman each collected 3 hits apiece to pace the 14 hit attack, with Ramos banging out 2 doubles ,2 rbi and 2 runs scored. The Sox defense played errorless ball and made several stellar plays in the field.
Congratulations, again, Frank and fellow Cougars. Continue with the attitude you displayed today and more victories will be forthcoming.
Gosh, Don, your write-up had me on the edge of my seat--and believing once again that maybe we might just steal one from the mighty Black Sox--only to have my hopes dashed once again.
Mike Hart should tap you for the TU sports pages. You do have a way with words--and baseball.
Congratulations on the fine win and thanks again for the encouraging words.
