In a game that was much closer than the final score, the Shasky's battled the A's to the end.
In the first, The A's scored three runs quickly highlighted by a single by Bucky Kruzinski and doubles by Geo Schillinger and Laddie Mawery. The Shasky's came back with a run of their own on a walk to Melendez, a stolen base, a single by McNary and finally scoring the run on a error.
In the second, each team traded single runs. The top of the third the A's pushed across another run to make it 5-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Shasky's used some very timely hitting and took advantage of the A's to plate 6 big runs. The first six batters of the inning each scored a run with the Shasky's Burns, McNary, Brearton, Schiller and Hoeg each getting singles and Callahan with a huge double. Ed Class had relieved Art Gianakos during the inning. The final out of the inning was made on an extremely close 8-1-2 (Haff - Class -Demers) play at the plate on the single by Hoeg. It was now 8-5 Shasky's.
The A's came back in the 4th with 2 opportunity runs by David Schillinger and Wayner Newcomb.
In the 5th, after Class kept the Shasky's off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th, the A's came up with 2 more on a walk to Moon and singles by Geo Schillinger and Ed Class with one of the runs scoring on a pickle play. They had taken the lead back at 9-8.
In the sixth, Haff led off for the A's and got an opposite field bloop double. After advancing to third, Newcomb thried to bunt Haff in, but the Shasky's were alert and got him in a pickle off third for the first out, Newcomb advancing the second. Kevin Golden drove him home with a single.
In the seventh, the A's scored three insurance runs, making the final score 13-8 A's.
For the A's, the final three innings were handled by Bucky Kruzinski (2IP, 1H, 2K) and Kevin Moon (1IP, 2K).
I don't have the pitchers for the Shasky's - help me out there. guys. Great game - keep fightin'!
Nice game the other night vs. the Shasky's. They have a nice group of ballplayers and guys on that team and it is only a matter of time that they come together and start becoming competitive in the league, we have all been there. Great to see a couple of my old buddies on that team, Tony Melendez and Mike Cahill. Two class guys and good solid ballplayers. (both of whom I played with as teammates years and years ago, where does the time go?) Best of luck down the road. Take care. Kevin
