Need a player 7-30-07

Speaking of sub lists...the Cubs play tonight at the Bob Moore. We have seven definites, one "pretty sure" and one "might be a little late". I am managing for Dennis this week; I don't know the specific guidelines for recruiting subs. If you are interested in playing tonight and are eligible to sub in the 38+ league, contact me at 465=3377, ataball@msn.com or by cell phone at 366-5531. Thanks.

Don,

I was planning on helping you guys out, but I was turned down when I asked the other team. I guess that is why Mikey added his post. I will be helping out the Mets tonight since the other team didn't have an objection. Good luck to you!

I'd like to add some perspective to this issue, since it seems like there's been some misunderstanding. For the record, my team is not directly involved in these issues.

In the 38s, the playoffs mean a lot. If you are seeded badly, it could be one game and you are out. You play all season -- with the guys on your roster -- to earn a place in the standings.

There are valid reasons why opposing managers can veto a borrowed player. You can imagine the scenarios: a tight race, a meaningful game, and a team borrows two difference-makers. It's not legitimate, and it's not right, yet it can alter the playoff seedings.

Now maybe the White Sox don't care and they've allowed the Mets to take on Joe Fitzgerald, reportedly a wonderful player who may not be 38 years old (I don't know). To the White Sox, it might not matter. Hell, it probably won't matter. But other teams are jockeying for position, trying to win games, trying to earn a slot that they deserve. All anyone asks is for an even playing field. Borrow players who are the right age. Make a public call on the board -- in advance -- and you will get some responses. There are good guys, good players, who always love to get in an extra game.

That's why the rule is in place. It's a good rule. It prevents a variety of nonsense that used to go on in this league some years back. If a manager enforces the rule by rejecting a player, it doesn't make that manager unsportsmanlike or cowardly. He just wants to play the team on the schedule, not some new & improved version, all wearing different hats. I think that's fair and reasonable.

One more thing: I do resent how this sort of thing always turns on the team that shows up with nine guys to play. It's always their fault for not allowing this and for enforcing such-and-such a rule. Meanwhile the real problem is that one team didn't show up to play. When that happens, it often places the opposing team in an awkward position.

Anyway, I don't think anybody is a bad guy here. Everybody has their own take on things and, so long as it's within the rules, you have to respect that.

JP I don't want to drag this issue out but I would like to quickly clarify my position in this posting. First, I understand the need for the rules regarding substitutes. I empathize with the opposing manager having to accept or reject a prospective sub; a real damned if you do damned if you don't scenario. I spoke to Jimmy K. prior to tonight's game and I supported his decision to reject Joe Fitz as our sub choice.

I am acting as team manager in Dennis' absence and simply wanted to avoid a forfeit situation. I followed the procedure that your posting suggested. I posted a notice on the bulletin board asking specifically for someone who is eligible to sub in the 38s. There was no alterior motive in making the request.

Fortunately, ten Cub players did show up and played a very good game against a strong Giants team. We all shook hands at the end and look forward to more baseball.

Hopefully we will see the Pirates in the playoffs but preferably in a later round!

White Sox do care....but faced with a forfiet win, elected to roll the dice and to play baseball.....final score White Sox 13 - Mets 12.....Joe Fitz had a nice double and rbi, and is 2 weeks from his 37th birthday......if White Sox had lost - no bitchinge here - we played baseball.

My apologies to the White Sox; I didn't mean to say you didn't care, since I understood the position you were in. You may not have felt like you had a choice.

My feeling is that teams in the 38s need to first pursue other options before recruiting an underage MVP from the 28 division.

We play in divisions with an age limit for the sole purpose of giving older players -- at every level, 28s, 38s, 47s -- the opportunity to play the game. Every time we put a younger guy out there, it bumps out an older player. It is my contention that we need to uphold the rights of those older players and provide them with an opportunity to play. Perhaps that's "panty-waisted," but that's the way I see it.

As far as the met's are concerned, I have no problem with teams borrowing players and want to thank Jimmy D for letting us borrow Fitz for last nights game. I called 5 people before Fitz and 10 of the 14 teams were playing last night , so the pool was dwindled. Good luck to all and most of all play ball.

JimmyP...I respect your opinions and you make some valid points. I agree about protecting older players right to play. Thats certainly not my argument. My discussion began with our team having trouble finding "acceptable players" recently and on short notice so that the older players can play the game. The argument about a player "too good" is insulting to those players that are allowed to play on a substitute basis. Thats all my argument is. I guess next time, we are short handed I still would not know who to call last minute except place a post and hope that someone agrees to it. My complaint is, do you want to play with who we can get to play or do you want to receive a forfeit win. Either way no one wins and maybe nobody plays. The other point I am making is that not once in our short tenure has a Cubs manager or acting told another team that a substitute was unacceptable. The rules are arbitrarily applied depending upon who is asking and who is being asked. One last thing, what is with teams allowing players to play a game without the same uniform. Can one assume that if the player on the field has a different uniform on that they are a roster player or a ringer??? Just a question.

I didn't think it would cause this many problems by teams letting me play. Teams were short so they asked me. Bottom line is that on August 9th (Happy B-Day to me) I will be legal!

I just wanted to play baseball and any opportunity I have to do that I will, however, I do understand all the pros and cons.

Take care,

To Mike of the Cubs and the rest of the league:
Re: uniforms. I've always believed that we follow the uniform rules of the CDMSBL, that all players be in proper uniform.
Unfortunately, I now understand why it doesn't happen.

I was supposed to get jerseys back from two players from last year's team. Since neither player is active this year, and since they didn't pay for their jerseys, I wanted them returned to me. They have not returned REPEATED phone calls/emails for me to meet them. There was another player who also did not return this year who bought two shirts last year, and I offered to buy back one or both of them. He originally said OK, but now hasn't answered repeated calls/emails to meet.

Also, I went to Cahill's in Troy to order three more shirts - IN MAY! I left them one jersey so they could duplicate the shirts accordingly. He said it would be no problem. Finally, two weeks ago, I picked up my sample shirt and canceled the order. I just got tired of the excuses not to mention trips to Troy to retrieve the sample shirt for each game.

So, one of my players wears a Hornets jersey because we are teammates on that 47 division team. And it's black, though the lettering/color is different. And two other players wear plain black shirts.

At this point in the season, I'm not sure where to go for three shirts, so I stopped trying because I have more important matters on my plate.

But to answer any questions, no one on my team is a ringer. Again, I have 18 rostered players. Not all have Giants jerseys because of the reasons above. And I have not had to borrow anyone.

If anyone knows a reliable source where I can get these shirts done in a reasonable time, let me know.

Thanx
Jim Konstantakis
Giants manager
