A wild one at Rottredam's Memorial Park - the new home field of the White Sox, thanks to Rick Caruso's effort and influence, and a very entertaining PA address announcer, while playing under the lights, was a great back drop for a great game.....although in their debut at their new home field, the schedule called for the Mets to be the home team, and started the crafty veteran Dan Maynard on the mound. The Mets jumped on top 3-0 on solid hits by Lex Herlett, Dan Maynard, abd Tony Perella to put the White Sox in a hole.....Pale Hose broke through in 3rd, spinning the order for 7 runs, with a variety of bunt base hits by the middle of the order including Dunbar, McCann, a 3 run 2B by Vince Koster the key knock to the inning, as well as a perfect drop bunt by winning pitcher Mark Johnson....Maynard and Parella continued to hit the s^%# out of the ball with back to back triples in the 4th and climbed back to a 11-9 deficit against the Chisox starter, aided by a a couple of miscues. Johnson, the sharp lefty got in a hole in the sixth on a lead off knock by the top of the Met's order, with a ribby single cutting lead to 11-10; Mets got even on a passed ball at 11-11 when Parella narrowly scooted home eluding tag of a diving C Fred Phillips tag............Top 7, with one out, Ken Glyndmire singles, F. Phillips lines a 1B....after punch out of the #4 hitter by Jim Jansen, Mets offer Bill Phillips a free pass, to face Read Shepherd. Shep battled to 2-2 count, clutches up and flares a 2-ribby knock between Mets 2B, RF and CF, and Sox go up 13-11......Rick Geyer opens the bottom of the 7th with a shot just inside the bag at third...the Mets got a good rally started, and have first and third with one out when Caruso makes a running catch in right an fires a 2-hop strike to the plate, just missing a play a the plate to make it 13-12, but Fred Phillips alertly makes a back handed stab of the short hop, and fires to second to nail the trapped Met, who couldn't slam on the brakes rounding the keystone sack........Johnson then emptied the tank to fan the final Met threat, and earn the well deserved "W"........................White Sox 13 - Mets 12
I can't say any more than Jimmy D, congrats to the White Sox as they never quit and played hard all the way threw. Both games ended up very competitive to the end this year and we look forwards to the next meeting. This was a offensive barrage by both teams and unfortunately we didn't score enough in the end. Jim Bonaparte. Met's 8-8
