The Yankees earned a trip to the championship series by beating the Hornets 9-4 and sweeping the semi-finals 2 games to none. The Yanks started the game with 3 runs in the first with 2 outs and built on that with 3 more in the third and one each in the 4th, 6th and 7th. Jerry Solomon pitched a complete game holding the Hornets to 5 hits over six innings before allowing 2 runs in the seventh. The defense was solid playing errorless ball. Dave Latina, Steve Van Gelder, Paul Celantano and Artie Gianakos had 2 hits each while Artie and Ralph Caputo reached base in all 4 plate appearances.
The Hornets should be commended on having a great season as they played with class and determination right to the end.
If you're going to sign my name to things you should at least spell it right.
I mentioned this to Dick S and Jimmy K, but think it bears repeating in this forum- Their players have been through an unbelieveablly brutal week and had every reason to make excuses, complain etc., but no one on our team heard a single negative comment from any of them.
An real example of class and sportsmanship for the rest of us . . .
Because Paul keeps putting this information on our team website and we suggested he just put it on the bulletin board with the scores, He asked me to just copy his info and post it for him. Now all of a sudden he asks me why I followed his directive. Make up your mind Paul or just do it.
Now you know Dennis!!! By the way, nice pitching the other night.
Artie, Let me ask you another question. Why did you steal second (passed ball) in the bottom of the 6th inning with your team up by six and the 1st baseman not holding you on? There were some angry players on the Hornets bench and I think I saw a few of them waiting for you down Swift Road after the game. LOL
First of all, this is the playoffs and a six run lead in this league is not a guarantee of victory. Second, if they are not holding me on then thats their fault. In playoffs, players have stolen with bigger leads. So let's get off that subject.
By the way, I'll always be available for a get together, whether it's Swift Rd. or Rodeo Drive. And I sign my name to my posts.
WOAHA there, NOTES. There were no angry Hornets on the bench when Artie stole second, so let's put that to rest. Artie is right, that was not that big a lead, AND, like he said, it was the playoffs. We didn't hold him because we didn't think he could run.
We were all shocked that he took off, but not angry. It was a good play and showed his passion in helping be sure his team was going to advance to the finals.
