The 37 Cubs picked up their first win of the season Saturday over the Pirates at New Scotland, to even our record at 1-1. The Cub bats came alive, as we raced out to a 7-0 lead.
Tom Shepardson completely dominated on the hill with 5 shutout innings, and 8k's. Yours truly came in to get some work and was promptly racked around the yard as the Pirates scored 3 in the sixth, and 3 more in the seventh, before a groundout to third ended the rally.
Hall of Famer Jim Mcquade and Jim Walters each had multiple hits to lead the Cubs.
Jonny, I wanted to correct one error in your post. The Cubs actually beat us 7-5 not 7-6, although we did have the tying run at the plate with 2 outs. No need however to correct the fact that Tom Shepardson pitched a masterful 5 innings, scattering just 4 hits and getting those 8 k's. Three Pirates, Kane, Wander and Burns finished with 2 hits each. Congrats to our old teamate and new 37 manager Jim McQuade on his 1st win. I'm just sorry we had to be his initial victims.
Thanks for the correction Bob - you just helped lower my ERA by about 10 runs!! One other correction from ESPN News - Shep racked up 10 k's in his 5 innings of work - must of had that slider working..
