For those who were at New Scotland today (and those who were not), I spoke with Don tonight. He was examined and released from St. Peter's hospital this evening.
Don was involved in a very violent collision today while playing second base. A Yankee runner was attempting to steal second while Don was covering the base. The throw from the catcher was tailing towards first. The runner had his head down and Don was 100% focused on catching the ball. Neither play saw the collision coming. Don was on the ground for about five minutes before being assisted to the "dugout" (shade tree). After resting for about 15 minutes, he was back to managing.
Being the gamer he is, Don kept himself in the lineup and when it was his turn to hit, he hit a line drive to left for a single. Running hard to first, he collapsed again after reaching the base. As a precaution, we called the EMT's and after examining him at the field, they decided to bring him to a hospital.
His doctor told him to take it easy. I suspect he'll be back on the field sooner than we think.
glad to hear you are home and resting Don. I'm sure when Tom wrote "FELL better" he meant FEEL better since you have mastered the art of hitting the dirt...Get back soon Donny when the big bell quits ringing.
Donny is not only a hard player but one of the guys that always reminds me that baseball is fun.Thank God he's OK,it was a serious collision that could have crippled any of us.He is as tough as iron,I guess when you work as Keith Richards stunt double for 40 yrs you get that way. See you soon and stop harrassing those nurses.
Donnie, Kind of put a scare into me as I watch you on the ground buddy. Ater talking to you last night after you got home I was very happy to hear your voice. You are one of the great guys of the league.
I have no doubt that... 1) You did it to get to see the nurses. 2) You held on for the tag. 3) You had that re-occurring nightmare (dream?!?) of Wayne while you laid on the ground 4) You'll get them archer's bows that you call legs back underneath you and be back at it real soon.
Donny Gun forgot to tell ya i only took one cold beverage out of your cooler when me and the Rock put in your jeep. Take care baseball warrior. See ya at work tomorrow.
When it comes to gutsy play, you da man... its always fun playing with or against you - you give 100% as can be attested by seeing the way you walk... take care, my friend...
The bell keeps ringing but when I go to the door no one is there. Guys, thanks for your concern and well wishes. I'll be back in the dirt soon. We all share a passion for this game and I consider myself very fortunate to share the fields and play with and compete against all of you. Ed, your compassion and caring for me at the field is a testament to your outstanding character. Also, a hardy thanks to Melanie, who missed out on watching the game to make sure I was OK. Later, I have to go answer the door now.
