With the end of the regular season one week away, we need to decide what is going to be done with the rainout games that don't get made up. There is one team that has 6 games left to play and two more that have 5 games to play and four more with 4 games to play. In a perfect world, all of the teams would have dilligently scheduled their rainouts for make-ups and the rains stay away, and we all play 20 games. This isn't a perfect world and I am sure that there will be some teams that don't even get 20 games scheduled. What is our policy with those teams? Is it the same as it was last year? I think how we handled it last year was fair.
I have a question about the calculation of the percentage. Looks like right now ties count as "no game". Should it be "winning" percentage of total games played? I figure I would ask this question now rather than wait and make a big issue of it later.
There are really three ways this can go...
1) Wins divided by wins + losses. 2) Wins divided by total games. 3) Wins plus .5 for each tie divided by total games.
I am not advocating any certain way, but I can see it possibly being a big issue. I just want a clarification. I know this has been discussed before, I just don't remember the resolution.
I think the 2 points for a win 1 pt for a tie is a pretty fair way to do things. My only suggestion is the total maximum points should be the same base for each team.
As such if a team plays 20 games and that is the most games played by any team for the year the base points should be 40.
This does not change the overall % a great deal but it does give a small benefit to those teams who were dilligent in getting as many games played for the season as physically possible and encourages teams to get games made up if missed.
Pts 40 W L T W L T Total Tot pts PCT A 12 5 2 24 0 1 25 40 0.625 B 12 1 0 24 0 0 24 40 0.600 C 12 8 0 24 0 0 24 40 0.600 D 11 6 2 22 0 1 23 40 0.575 E 10 7 2 20 0 1 21 40 0.525 F 10 5 1 20 0 0.5 20.5 40 0.513
Yes good point. and we didn't institute anything to cover those teams that did'nt complete schedules. It was decided at the time by the mgr's that the commissioner would take all makeups past the 48 hour teams' limit and agressively schedule them as he saw fit. That worked pretty good. but it takes some diligence to do so. Last year I beleive we had all but three games rescheduled and played in the 38's.
Our decision has proved somewhat optimistic . the real probelm being the sheer number of games we play and the limited compatible dates and availalble fields. early on we are field poor so many makeups get scheduled later towards the end of the season when we are field rich. who isn't playing three or four times this week?
Complicating this is the adoption of a bigger playoff scenario including everyone and now a best of three playoff scenario. It needs room to play out so it needs to start on a given august date. further compressing the regular season. We all just voted to keep this compression and retain the weekday playoff schedule as well. In effect putting the play them or lose them rule.
I felt and still do that given th size of the division ,14 teams , the desire for a extended playoff format, and the above mentioned field constraints ...that we need to cut back on the amount of regular season games. I proposed 18. but in our off season optimism we voted to keep it all. so I agree that some form of reward/penalty needs to be instituted for completing or not completing the regualr season when it comes to final standings and playoff seedings. please keep your interest up on this issue and remind your GM to make this an agenda item when rules and formats are re-thought during the off season.
