55s: Gray Cougars vs. Americans (8-04-08)

The Gray Cougars wrapped up their season last night at New Scotland with a 12-2 victory over the Americans.

Rookie Murray Carr started for the Cats and threw a superb game, yielding only one run on one base hit through the first four innings. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Dave Plew entered in relief for the Cougars and promptly set down what turned out to be the final three Americans hitters.

Jeff Singer had two hits and three rbi's and Jim Wing had a single, double, and two walks to lead the offense for the fightin' felines. Wing also did a first-rate job behind the plate despite playing with more leg injuries than one could count.

Thanks, as always, to American's manager Tony Scanu, my 46s commissioner, good friend, and managerial inspiration. It's guys like Tony that make this playing in this league such a pleasure.

Thanks also to John Reel, 55s commissioner, for putting this division together and making it work so smoothly. The 55s experience is definitely unique and special, and I think everyone would attest that it really was a lot of fun. John also made himself available as last night's sole umpire, and I must say he delivers one of the most stylish "strike" calls I've heard.

And special thanks to Don Wixon, who ably filled in for us one more time. They just don't come any better than Donny, as a player and as a man.
