Game time of 6 p.m. was pushed back to 7:45 to get the field ready. Jim Bonaparte and several of his teammates as well as some Giants players worked diligently to make what normally would have been a game ppd by rain playable for the first game of the best-of-3 quarterfinals at Bob Moore last night. Joe Gatta, who maintains the field for the town, saved us with his tractor work and patience as both teams sat in wait after about 3 1/2 hours of work.
As for the game, it was filled with suspense all game long. The Mets threatened nearly every inning, but Steve Lounello and the Giants defense met every threat and pulled out a 3-2 win over All-League candidate Chris Dunn and the Mets with two runs in the top of the 7th. Dunn also had three hits. Dunn earlier this season 2-hit the Giants, 4-0.
Lounello went the distance for the first time this year with one of the gutsiest performances one could ever hope to witness over a Mets team that is every bit as good as its No. 2 seeding.
Wayne Philips drove in all three Giants runs, including a 2-run single to give the Giants the lead. Dan Maguire, in CF, threw out two Mets at the plate.
This was a game for the ages, Congrats to both Steve Louenello and Chris who pitched their respective tails off. Dan Mcguire made two great throws to the plate and we left a ton of baserunners on. Wish we came out on top , but there is more baseball to play. Nice job Giants. Jim Bonaparte Mets
