The Golden Marlins beat the Nationals at Icabod Crane field tonight - I think it was 7-0. But what was incredible was that Pete Westfall was pitching a no hitter after 4 innings. Pete was in total control mixing his pitches and hitting his spots. But in order for the next pitcher (me) to get in some innings, he bowed out. Now I'm not sure how many pitchers have had no hitters going after 4 innings, but as a pitcher, I can tell you it's a big deal. I just found it unbelievable that he would give up a chance for a no no to allow me to throw. I have to be honest and say in all candor that I'm not sure I could have done that. But Pete did teach me something about himself and the game.
When I asked him about it before I went out in the 5th inning, he said that the game is fun but in the morning, we still have to go to work. He taught me that none of us are bigger than the game itself. Pete - you're quite a guy. I hope you have many more opportunities to throw a no no. The Marlins are fortunate to have you on our team. Thanks!!!
I can tell you first hand that Pete is a batter's nightmare when he is on the money. That just shows you character in his actions. The best in the league, hope I never have to see him again.
Didn't Pete split a no hitter with another pitcher in the first game of last year in New Scotland? It was literally my first week in the league and couldn't believe how good these pitchers were. I'm pretty sure it was him.
Johnny you been takin that memory mix? Good thing you don't ake this game too seriously, Happy Fathers' Day to all the Dads... and at 8:01 praying for good news for the games...
