is there anyone solely responsible for contacting umpires before scheduled games to ensure their presence? should there be a need for one? are we relying on a small pool of umps to handle our games? this has been an issue recently at 45 and 55 games, and probably needs to be addressed. if we are relying on individual division president's to set up the umpiring crews, perhaps they need to delegate to someone else that responsibility. i would think they have enough to do. maybe we need to push harder for an in house solution,ie. recruiting more players to get involved in umpiring out of division contests so there is no hint of collusion. perhaps mandate that every team submit a list of 3-5 names who would be willing to take on such a task? i'm fairly certain that we could avoid these circumstances if we pulled together for the common good and realize this league will only run as well as we allow it to. lets not get mired down in waiting for a solution to materialize out of thin air. i know that i personally would like to see this league move forward and come up with solutions for several of the issues which seem to crop up every year. i will go as far back as wanting to buy defribullators for this league after a scare was put into folks when they realized someone can actually die at a game, and we failed to spend the few hundred dollars for this equipment. as far as i know, we still do not have this available . this is just an example, and i'm sure there are others that need to be looked into as well. i would ask that our elected representatives this winter come up with a viable plan for the future of this league,a blueprint if you will, to ensure we have some focus on how we can provide the necessary means to move forward.
P.S.- i sat on the board in the past,so i realize that everything cannot be done at once, that's why i would like to see us formulate a planned timeline to ensure we are all working towards the same goal. pete westfall
good stuff Pete. while it hasn't ever been codified. the general thought is that the president and the commsioners run the season and the board gives the vision and steers us to change. (the players elect mgr's mgrs elect board members and commsioners). As we grown so big there has been alot of talk about these entities/titles their inherent responsibilties and powers and how they relate. there ahs been talk at the board level about re-visioning, planning and re-orgainizing to extent everyone knows how to relate to the powers that be. we've come a long way form the days when we were pretty much one age group and were all in sync on most issues. not that dissent is bad , it just slows the process of decsion making. I have hopes we can get this all done soon. this particular board is proactive and gets all this. still we move slow...
