On a rainy Sunday morning at New Scotland, the Gray Cougars held off the high-flying Hawks by the score of 5-0 in the opening round of the 55+ playoff series.
For the Hawks, Kevin McDonald (I believe it was him--they gave me only first names for the scorebook) had two hits. Bob Weitz pitched a strong game in hard luck for the raptors, with help in the sixth from the near-legendary Artie Gianakos.
Dave "The Magician" Plew was once again magical on the mound for the Grays, scattering only five hits and walking no one (though he did hit Susan Phillips {on the raised hand--whew!} and Don Wixon {on the leg--no, not there!} with pitches.
Plew also had two hits (one, a mammoth double), an rbi, and scored a run. Rich Frank and Jim Turner were both 2 for 3. Frank Montagano defied expectations once again by making a running catch of a fly ball to left field.
Congratulations to my Gray Cougars teammates on a strong team effort. They played a solid defensive game and all managed to get on base at least once.
Thanks, as always, to my friend Jim "Red Talons" Brearton, manager, and the entire Hawks team for another exciting game.
