Playing two at this late point in the season takes its toll on older bodies. The Marlins came away with one win, one loss, numerous nagging injuries, and one really damaging serious injury.
In game one, the story was Steve Lounello on the mound for the Outlaws. He was simply dominant. He scattered 3 hits, and gave up zero walks, while striking out 6 in a complete game shutout. The Giants got all the runs they would need, in the first inning when the leadoff man singled, Mario Arduini reached on an error, while attempting a sacrafice bunt, and Mick Novak homered with two outs. The Outlaws would add an insurance run in the third, on an error, a stolen base, and an RBI single by Mike Hicks. Other than that, Chuck Sohl kept a very potent Outlaws line-up in check. He scattered just 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out one. Only one of the Outlaw runs was earned.
In game two, the story was the Marlins bats coming alive and getting a little help from the Outlaws pitchers and defense. The Marlins scored 11 runs as they pounded out 8 hits and reached base on 7 walks, 1 HBP, and 4 errors. Mike Girard had a 2-run HR and a single, while Randy Craft and Mike Clary also got two hits each. Meanwhile, Phil Gadomski limitted the Outlaws to 5 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, 3 BB's, and 2 K's. Wayne Phillips doubled and singled for the Outlaws.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the night that Mike Clary had in center field for the Marlins. He made numerous running and sliding catches, and even started two double plays in the night cap. Paul Miles was an iron man behind the dish catching all 14 innings for the Marlins. Noone appreciates that more than the manager, who also happens to be the back-up catcher!
