"The Damn Yankees put the finishing touches on a perfect 13-0 season with a 10-5 victory over the Platinum Marlins in the championship game of the 55 Division on Monday evening at New Scotland Field. Pete Laflamme went the distance on the mound and scattered seven hits, and Steve Vangelder led a 17-hit attack with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Matt Kelly had three hits and two RBI from his leadoff spot while Bob Noto, Larry Pape and Bill Kervan each had two hits.
The Damn Yankees, who won the league title with an 11-0 record, never trailed in the game. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but John Reel ripped a bases-clearing triple to right field to pull the Marlins to within 4-3 after two innings. However, the Yankees tacked on four more runs in the top of the third to put the game away. Ed Diegel added a pair of hits. In the final inning, John Reel had an RBI, stole second, and Ed Diegel went home. The Marlins closed out a solid season with a 9-4 record and runnerup finish for both the league title and championship.
Following the game, Bill Kervan, the Yankees ageless wonder, was named Most Valuable Player. Kervan, 64, hurled the Game 1 win over the Marlins on Sunday as he made a 4-0 first inning lead hold up by scattering three hits over seven innings. He won 10 games on the mound for the Yankees this season with a 2.60 ERA and tacked on a .450 batting average for good measure" (Brown).

Congratulations to the Damn Yankees. They played very well all season long and earned the championship. They are a solid team all the way through, both offensively and defensively; and they are a good bunch of guys.
But I also want to congratulate and thank my Platinum Marlin teammates for a great year. The guys on this team are truly dedicated and classy baseball players. They play with heart, they play through pain and they play to win. I was proud to be a part of this team. I'm already looking forward to next year!
I want to thank all the managers, for always playing with class. I also want to thank, my players. I know I am lucky, but I did not have any problems with anyone. They all showed up for the games, hurt or not. I know that at this age, it is just how hurt you are. Also ,I want to thank the Marlins, for bringing out the best in all of us. I know for one, when I see the fish, I know there will be a battle. Not to leave out, all the nice guys, in the whole league.. Steve Van Gelder
