on a gorgeous night at cba - sunny, blue skies, temperatures in the comfortable high 70s, no humidity, rich green grass, all of that a good half reason why, after our winters here, we're there - the peppers and blue jays played an interesting game that had a little of everything: wild pitches, hit batsmen, errors, great catches, a long, line drive triple, and perhaps the grittiest performance by a player i've ever seen on a diamond.
the linescore:
Peppers -- 2 1 1 0 2 5 x - 11 12 1 Blue Jays --1 1 2 0 2 0 x - 6 9 4
x = game called for darkness.
the game was a see-saw affair, as the peppers got two runs in the first on two walks and a double by mike bintz (one of two he would hit.) the blue jays responded with one run - and we were off. in the end, the peppers won their first game of the year, profiting from 3-for-3 hitting from joe sarubbi and greg hoin, and 2-for-4 efforts from mike bintz, ed obertubessing and dave demaria. we also benefited from a number of blue jay infield errors.
dan mcguire, who with (?) hughes went 2-for-3 on the night, got one of the prettier hits of the night for the blue jays with a line drive triple to right in the fifth that kept rising and shot over our surprised rightfielder's head. the funny, only-in-baseball thing was that the fielder, roger coryell, who'd made a nifty over the shoulder catch in the first inning while playing left, was one of our three walking wounded. (it's vacation time, we had only nine guys, so he, like the rest of us, was irreplacable.) the inning before, he told me he'd tweaked his groin muscle some, and asked if he could go to right, which, until the fifth, had seen no action at all. i said sure. wouldn't you know it? dan's hit was the first of three balls that would be fly his way the next two innings. roger caught the other two - one a diving catch in right center.
as for the gritty peformance? herb carter our catcher. herb walked in the first and stole second, twisting his ankle as he went in. we got him in the dugout, put ice on it, and, with an icebag still strapped to his ankle and having a hard time squatting, he caught all six innings. he also went 1-4 at the plate and scored two runs and guided me through six innings of mound work.
