The A's would like to wish congrats Q on being voted in as the President of the league. We are confident, after numerous dealing with Q that he will be a great leader and always do what is in the best interest of all of us.
Q has some very big shoes to fill. Kevin Jackson has seen this league through some amazing growth, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
Having said that, I know that Q is very capable and has the neccessary passion for the position. He will have the full support of the board as we continue to make this league second to none.
i agree with andy and echo both of jonny's points: hail and many thanks to kevin, cheers and good wishes to quentin.
i've long wanted to post this about kevin: i think it shows his devotion to the league and his considerable talent as a player.
about two years ago, my vets team couldn't play our scheduled sunday morning game because the field we were to play on was too wet from a rain the night before. we needed to get the game in. the vets' manager tony scanu called me and asked if i knew of any available dry fields. i didn't - but i called kevin in hopes he might. he said the town of kinderhook field was free, but he thought it needed some work. tony and i got some guys together with some rakes and we got there early - i guess around 10 for an 11:30 game.
kevin was already there, raking the mound, a wheelbarrow of dirt by his side. he'd already smoothed out the dirt around home plate. i was stunned: he wasn't playing. he didn't have to be there.
as we worked, tony called guys on his cellphone to let them know of the game change. he learned we could only get eight guys to start the game; the ninth would show up by 12:30. i turned to kevin again: would he play for us? he hesitated - he had a game later in the afternoon - but he said if he could leave by 1 p.m., he'd go home and get his uniform. and that's what he did. we had 9 to start the game, kevin played first, got a two hits for us, and then scooted off after our player showed.
four days later, kevin's yankees and the vets played at new scotland. kevin was dhing because his knees hurt. i believe he grounded out in his first at-bat, but in his second, with the game unexpectedly close or tied, he turned on the ball, it was a smooth, quick swing, and from the moment his bat cracked the ball, you knew it was gone. i was playing center and saw it well: it was easily the highest and longest homer i ever saw hit at new scotland, a towering, beautiful shot that must have cleared the left center fence by an easy 80 feet. the ball hit the parking lot hard and its first bounce was a good 25 feet in the air.
so in the space of four days, kevin made sure two teams could play and then helped his own team with a terrific homer. not a bad week.
i thought that week, and the man's contributions, shouldn't be lost in the fog of time.
