I have worked at New Covenant for four years--first as a classroom teacher and now as a Literacy Specialist. I have seen firsthand the amazing progress the children have made and cannot picture myself teaching anywhere else. We are the hardest working group of educators who work daily to better the lives of our children.

The SUNY Board of Trustees will be voting March 23rd on the charter renewal of our school. The preliminary vote was 3 to 1 to close the school. We were given very strict benchmarks last year that had to be met in order to be renewed--WE MET THE BENCHMARKS! Motivations that are NOT in the best interest of children and political bureaucrats are the driving force behind the push to close us.

The question on everyone's mind is:

Why would you consider closing a school where 650 minority children, who live in poverty, are thriving and closing the achievement gap?

Attached is the data to prove how far our children have come in the last 4 years.


The Facts

We have increased our English Language Arts scores from 31% proficiency (05-06) to 67% proficiency (08-09)


We have increased our Math scores from 37% proficiency (05-06) to 80% proficiency (08-09)


We are out-performing the Albany School district. If New Covenant closes, our children will be forced back to schools that are performing lower than we are.


93% or our student population is eligible for free or reduced lunch


7 other charter schools have received renewals that are not performing as well as we are and yet still received renewal.
