Pirates 2, Yankees 2

Pretty terrific game, featuring strong pitching performances from ageless Jerry Solomon and Todd Calhoun. The game was called after seven innings. For the Yankees, Solomon was great. And Jimmy McQuade -- who is one of my favorite players, ever -- f'ing killed us all night. Two big hits, driving in both of the Yankees' runs, plus a terrific catch running toward the fence in the left-field corner. Booker did his usual damage. Bailey played well. And Rodney Smith, I believe, made two great throws from CF. The Yankees did keep us in the game by making 4-5 errors, I don't have the book in front of me.

For the Bucs, we played a clean defensive game, particularly behind the plate with the old Siena backstop, Dave Moreau. Come to think of it, we featured an all-Siena battery. On the downside, Marc Tryon reinjured his knee -- actually, it's now the other knee -- and the cold hard fact is he's running out of knees. Marc loves to play, he's a core guy and a team leader, and it just sucks to see him reduced rolling around on that skiff, hat in hand, looking for charity.

Anyway: Bottom of the 7th, score 2-2. Moreau leads off with a sharp single (our second hit of the night). One thing leads to another, bases loaded, nobody out. Fly ball to CF, runner holds. Hard hit drive to slightly deeper CF, we send the runner (Kane) and it's a perfect throw: He's out by four feet.

End of game. Good baseball.
