The Cubbies won Saturday's contest on the field against the Blue Jays 7-2, then enjoyed a picnic, while watching a 15-16 year-old game. It was a great day.
More importantly, Tom Sheperdson returned to the mound to pitch his first competitive innings in more than a year and a half. Tom had some command issues, but showed the fastball and slider combination that makes him very dangerous to this divisions hitters if he can make it all the way back. The Cubs also got top-notch pitching performances by Ron Massaroni and Jon Martin. Mazz gave up just one hit and no walks, while striking out one, in his two innings of work. Jonny Martin gave up one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out two, in the final three innings of the game. This game also marked the return behind the plate of Dave Mitchell, after a two year exodus from catching. Dave threw out the only runner that tried to steal (the ump blew the call). Having Dave and Tom return to the line-up is like like signing two new big name free agents at mid season!!! I like the Cubs chances if these two can be full throttle by year's end! John Corrigan had two singles, hitting in the clean-up spot as a fill-in player for the Jays. Fred Phillips and Al Luciano had the other two Blue Jays hits. Randy Craft went 3 for 3, with a double and two singles to lead the Cubs attack. This sets up a big game between the #1 Outlaws and #2 Cubs Wednesday night at 8:30pm at Cook Park. It should be a great game!
