The Cubs and Rockies got together on a perfect night for baseball @ Kuhn field last night. Both teams were interested in tuning up for the playoffs, while trying to get injured players healthy. Jon Martin took the ball for the Cubs and showed that he is ready for the second season by shutting out the Rockies on four singles and one walk, while striking out four in his five innings of work. Meanwhile, Taz Nichols was busy keeping the Cubs bats quiet the first time through the order. He gave up two unearned runs, but definitely had the Cubs hitters off stride, as Tom Maney and Jim McQuade were the only Cubbies to manage hits the first time through. In the bottom of the third, the Cubs plated three more runs on a Tom Maney lead-off walk and consecutive singles by Randy Craft, Ron Lochner, and Mike Girard. After a hit batsman, Taz stuckout three of the next four Cubs batters. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs made it 9-0 with two walks and singles by Lochner, Girard, Sean Maney, and TJ Scorsone. The Cubs rally in the bottom of the fifth was started on a single by Andy Hoyle and an error that moved him to second. One out later, Randy Craft delivered Hoyle with a solid single. Another error on a Ron Lochner grounder brought Mike Girard to the plate, and one poorly located curveball later, the game was over on a "walk-off" home run. Cubs win 13-0. The worst the Cubs can do now, in the standings, is to finish second. If they can win Saturday against the Blue Jays, and get help either from the Highlanders or the Pirates next week against the Outlaws, the top seed is still a possibility. Eric Kohls had two of the Rockies four singles. Jimmy Keegan and Taz Nichols had the other two. Good luck to the Rockies in the playoffs. They will be alot tougher than they were tonight if, and when they get their key players back from injury.

That's an excellent roster the Cubs have. A great group of guys loaded with a lineup full of great hitters. Definitely will be a tough out in the playoffs - if they are an out at all.
