The Shaskys, down 4-0, plate 7 in the top of the 4th and then hold on for a dramatic 7-6 victory to advance to their first-ever 2nd-round playoff series.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the A's had the tying and winning runs on second and third with one out. A fly out to center was not deep enough for a sac thanks to a great throw to the plate by Tom Rosario that kept the runner at third. A walk ensued, and the bases were loaded with two outs when the final out was recorded.
It was a scrappy game by both teams. When the A's plated 3 in the bottom of the first it seemed like it would be a very long day for the Shaskys, especially with the mercy rule tossed aside for the playoffs. But Bob Weitz settled down a bit, allowing another run in the 3rd and two more in the 4th before Vince Koster came in to close things out with 3 scoreless innings.
It was a beautiful day for baseball at Bob Moore, but the sun played havoc with a few balls that the A's attempted to field and that helped the Shaskys out.
It was great game to play on a Saturday in August and hats off to the A's for nearly getting past the Shasky in what became a very close and exciting game.
