Pirates enjoyed our second consecutive two-hit shutout behind the combined efforts of Richie Knaupp (4 IP) and Todd Calhoun (3 IP).
Offensively, it was weird: 12 hits, a BB and a HBP, a couple of WPs and two errors -- yet somehow we managed to parlay all that into three sad-assed runs. I'll have to double-check the book, but I believe we stranded something like 37 men on base. Go drive by Elm Avenue, I bet a couple of those poor bastards are still there, sending up flares and eating bugs and surviving on their wits.
To his credit, Jays pitcher Sheen mixed his pitches effectively -- stayed away from the fat part of the plate -- and got toughest in tight situations. Pitching "in the pinch," as Christy Mathewson famously described it in his autobiography (worth reading, btw). Despite a couple of misplays, the Blue Jays played good defense, keeping the game within reach.
For the Bucs: Jordan, Moreau, Preller, and Knaupp all contributed two hits, and Ron Smaka sma(c)ked a double.
Oh yeah, we were short a player and borrowed the great Jimmy McQuade from the Yankees. He laced a rope to LF, going 1-3 for the night. Always a good guy to be around.
