Pete - ill give you the short version..... our grand poobah will do his usual recap after i get the book to him.
The Marlins faced off against Vermont after paying Maine back for the previous day's defeat.
Once again we gave our pitcher, Chris Arconti, almost literally no help. On Saturday he held Maine to 1 run through 6 innings before they battled for 6 in the top of the 7th. On Sunday in the championship game we scratched out a run in the top of the 1st and that was it for us for regulation.... we had a 1-0 lead the whole game until Vermont got a runner on with 2 outs who then scored on a triple. The 8th was scoreless and we put 3 on the board in the 9th and held that lead for a 4-1 win.
Mike will fill in all the nitty gritty of the games but i'll give a quick plug for Mike Kane, whose bases loaded hit drove in our 2nd and 3rd runs in the 9th. Another plug goes to Dave Blake who played a great right field ..... he was hustling and backing up throws all 5 games. In the 4th or so the leadoff hitter bunted, the ball took a funny bounce and the throw to first went past the 1st baseman ..... where great fundamental baseball by Dave had him in the right spot to grab the ball and fire to second to retire the runner... so rather than a guy on 2nd with no outs it was 1 out and no one on..... may very well have been a game saver!
One last plug goes out to Tom Maney who, on his own, put the team 1st and spent most of the championship game as an EH so we had our strongest arms in the outfield.
