2 games: marlins 7 peppers 1; h'birds 8, peppers 1

in back-to-back games at cba, on sunday and monday, the marlins and humminbirds were victorious, the peppers were not.

in sunday's hot and drippingly humid game, the marlins' jim ansel - who's very much back, which is good to see - allowed no hits through 4 innings, striking out six as the marlins cruised to a 7-2 win. for the marlins, who were up 2-0 through 4, and then struck with three hits and some bases on balls in the 4th, mash (full name?) was 2-for-2 and tom maney and ted poletto were 2-for-4 each and ralph caputo laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt. for the peppers mike bintz and mike hart were 1-for-2.

on monday, a cooler, more baseballish day, the peppers took a 1-0 lead into the third during which pitcher greg hoin got more than a handful of ground-ball outs with jumpy off-speed stuff. but then the h'birds scored three in the third on their way to a 7-1 win. ron coon, who went 3-for-3, got the big hit, a two-rbi double in the third, then the kingston boys proceeded to tack on about a run an inning through six when darkness ruled. hits were about even - eight for the h'birds, seven for the peps - but john latorre scattered his and allowed only one run. for the peppers, roger coryell went 3-for-3, mick mcallen 2-for-2 and mike hart doubled and scored on a steal of home.

despite the defeats, an occasional burst of laughter could be heard from the peppers' dugout. august delirums?
