I am glad you guys have a sense of humor about things.
It is good to see the Mario and Brian that I know.
Yes it is true. The 28+ and 38+ playoffs have been a real "twilight zone" episode.
I can't wait to hear the Yankees' humor about this when it is all over on Saturday.
Now there is a bunch of funny guys!!!
I'll see you guys Saturday (and Sunday) for some more fun!
This is a great game!!!!

I am a member of the Yankees and I have been reading the dialogue that has been going back and forth regarding Sunday's game. There is no doubt there was a collision at the plate which should have resulted in an out being recorded and an ejection, my issue is that it should not have taken a protest in order for this to be rectified. Let me clearly state that I do not feel it was the umpires fault that it got this far. They should be clearly informed of the rules as should each manager at the beginning of each year. For those of you who were not there Sunday, a member of the Board was sitting on our bench when it happened. As the umpire approached him he said something along the lines of, "I don't want to get involved." If he had spoke up and clarified the rule to the umpire, (if he new what it was that is) we would not be in this situation and two teams would not be inconvenienced on Saturday.

I think it's good that the Board is finally taking a position on enforcing the rules, however I don't think that in the middle of playoffs is the best time to do it. If you are going to take a stance either to the left or right it would be best doing it the entire season.

I also think that it is a joke that guys can show up and play on teams in the playoffs who did not play one regular season game. I think the 28+ League needs to implement a rule similar to the 38+ requiring a certain amount of games to be played.

OK so on the psychic hotline note, what does this mean for the rest of the playoffs... Yanks/Cubs winner vs Orioles on Saturday afternoon? Will the Yanks/Cubs winner be faced with the possibility of 3 1/2 games this weekend, or is the schedule pushed back at all?

I know (hope) that the information is being disseminated to the managers, but if someone could use this great tool of a website to post the updates to the schedules, it would be greatly appreciated. It can take a bit of time for the managers to disseminate that info amongst the players.

Thanks!

Dan,
It sounds like you are volunteering to be a part of the meeting that this league has every winter (open to all members of the league) where such rules changes are affected. Get in touch with any of the board members and they will be glad to make sure that you are aware of the scheduled meeting this offseason. That is where your comments can be of real use.
These guys put in a ton of time and efforts into getting fields, scheduling and rescheduling games and umpires, settling conflicts, etc., all so you and I can just show up, put on the spikes and enjoy this wonderful game that we love. I try to remember that every time a little something might not be just how I would want it.
If there is really something that "needs to be changed", I recommend joining these guys in getting it done. They would welcome the help!

Mike,
Thanks for informing me of the winter meetings, I will make it a point to attend and voice my comments.
I'm sure the Borad works very hard to assure that the season goes smoothly, but I think that it is essential that the umpires understand the rules that we play by especially by the time playoffs come around. The umpires in Sunday's game should have known that we play with a must slide rule and if violated the penalty is an out and an ejection. As I stated previously there was a Board member present at the game who should have sopke-up.
I too enjoy putting on the spikes and playing the game, but one of the great things about the game is that it's human and fortunately or unfortunately mistakes are made by the umpires. If a ball is clearly foul and everyone at the game knows it was foul, but the umpire calls it fair no matter what it's a fair ball because on the field the umpires enforce the rules and you can't protest rules. That's why it is essential for the umpires to be clearly informed.
Thanks again for your comments.

You are right on the ball.
I agree with you that the umpires need to know league-specific rules if they are going to be in charge of the game. This whole situation was unfortunate, but at least the league took the proper steps to rectify it, and I am sure that a lot more players and umpires are aware of the rule because of this happening the way it did. Maybe it was fate.
See you Saturday, and good luck.
