The WhizKids beat the Yankees 8-6 Friday night, behind the strong pitching of Jesse Braverman, Jim Konstantakis (WP), and Chris Abrams (save). Ed Draves had 3 of the WhizKids' 13 hits, with Braverman, Mike Lannon, and Billy Smith chipping in with 2 each. The Whiz scored in the 2nd on a sac fly by Jim Porter, knocking in Dave Palmer who had walked. They added 2 more in the 3rd on RBI singles by Braverman and Lannon. The Yankees took advantage of 3 Whiz errors to score 4 runs in their half of the frame, with Tim Brown and Pete LaFlamme getting key hits. Jim Konstantakis relieved Braverman, and got the last 2 outs without any further damage. The Whiz tied it up in the 4th when Jeff Teats walked, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on consecutive hit batsmen (Porter and Joe Torre), and scored on a single by Draves. Porter was out at the plate as he tried to score on the same play. In the 5th, the Whiz took a 7-4 lead on RBI's by Palmer, Abrams, and Teats. The Yankees came right back with 1 of their own as Brown scored in the bottom of the 5th. After a scoreless 6th, Braverman singled, and came all the way home on a double to the left field fence by Smith. Again, the Yankees took advantage of 3 more errors by the Whiz to score a run, and, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Abrams came on for the save, striking out the 1st batter he faced, and getting the last out on a liner to short. Steve VanGelder and the rest of the Yankees played tough to the last out. The rubber match of the series is July 27th. Jim Porter-WhizKids
