In the midst of a beautiful 4th of July weekend, The Nolan Propane Cardinals came armed with a host of fireworks of their own, not to mention a complete game, seven-strikeout performance by Rick Loffredo. Rick also went 4-for-4, scored two runs, knocked in two, and had three stolen bases.
The Division-leading Cardinals have won their seventh game of the season, 12-3 over the Gray Cougars.
Second baseman Harold Jenkins also had a big night with two doubles and two RBIs. Doug Zymeski contributed a big base hit and RBI on an evening when he could barely walk because of a bad back.
Everyone in the Cardinal lineup was on base multiple times. Along with Loffredo and Jenkins, Mark Josefski, Frank Tarantino, and Rodney Dunbar had two hits apiece; Skippy Lyons, Read Shepherd, and Susan Phillips each with one. Phillips, Zymewski, and Lyons had RBI's, and Read Shepherd knocked in two. Frank Tarantino was unflappable on third base with eight assists.
The game also marked the managerial debut of Susan Phillips who made the right call in the 7th inning. In a surprise move that would have made Casey Stengel proud, Susie, who had been in right field, observed the Cougars batters next up and put Harold Jenkins in right field for the final inning while she manned second base. With one out and Jeff Singer on second, lefty Dave Foreman smoked one down the line. Harold took one step in and put up his glove to catch the line drive and snuff out a potential Cougar rally.
Next up for the Cardinals, the Damn Yankees on Friday at New Scotland.
