Someone once told me that 70% of all doubleheaders are splits. Well the Giants and Golden Marlins did not disprove that theory last Sunday.
The Golden Marlins won game one behind the solid starting pitching of Phil Gadomski, backed up by a 12 hit performance from the offense. Mash threw a complete game, giving up just one run, on 8 hits and no walks, while striking out 2. The Fish scored one in the first on a RBI single by Mike Girard, two in the second aided by a couple of Giants errors, and one more in the fourth on a lead off double by Girard, followed by another Giant error. Meanwhile, Gadomski kept the Giants off the scoreboard until the fifth. With the Marlins adding a fifth run, in the top of the fifth inning, the Giants staged a rally in the bottom of the frame. After one was out, the Giants got consecutive singles from Jim Whitford, Billy Smith, and Tony Nardacci. That gave the Giants their first run and left two runners on for the meat of the Giants order. That is when Gadomski dug in and made his best pitches of the game. He got Paul Scuteri on a fielders choice and Steve Lounello on a flyball to left. He would give up just two singles the rest of the way. The Golden Marlins would plate 3 insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI's by John Latorre, Mike Clary, and John Reel. Girard would end the game with three hits, while Ron Lochner, Jim McQuade, and John Reel would all have two hits each. Jim Whitford, Tony Nardacci, and Billy Smith would all have two hits each for the Giants.
In game two, the Giants bats would come alive and score 8 runs on 14 hits. Jimmy Konstantakis, meanwhile, put the Marlins' bats to sleep. He scattered 10 hits while limitting the Golden Marlins to just one run. That run would come in the first as the Marlins would get a walk, then consecutive singles from Girard, Lochner, and Ferraro. The Giants would more effectively bunch their hits getting one run in the first on two hits, 1 more in the third on 3 consecutive singles. They would plate 4 runs in the fourth, on 3 singles, two doubles and a walk. The Giants would close out the scoring in the sixth, with two more runs on a double and two singles. Steve Lounello was the hitting star for the Giants, going 4 for 4, with a double and three singles. Paul Scuteri would add two doulbles and a single and Mike Lannon contributed 2 singles. Ron Lochner, Mike Ferraro, and Jim McQuade had two singles each, for the Golden Marlins.
With the split, The Golden Marlins moved their league leading record to 8-1. The Giants moved to 7-4.
