Blue Thunder edges Dodgers

Jon Martin came in to slam the door shut in the seventh and Pete Geannelis came up big with the bat and his arm as the Blue Thunder eked out a 5-3 win over the Dodgers on Sunday evening.
Geannelis pitched six strong innings, allowing just six hits and two earned runs, which actually RAISED his earned run average to 1.48. He also picked off a runner and snared a few hot shots back to the box to pick up his fourth win on the mound. Geannelis also led the way at the plate with a single, double and sacrifice fly to raise his team-leading average to .545 on the season. Martin added a key RBI single.
With the Thunder up 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Dodgers rallied to put runners on first and third with nobody out. Martin then took over, striking out the first batter he faced and inducing a pair of ground outs to secure the Thunder's 9th win in 13 games.
Ed Oberbutussing and Dave Lapinell each had two hits to lead the Dodgers at the plate. Brett Conlin turned in a strong complete game effort on the mound, scattering seven hits and allowing just two earned runs. The web gem of the game was turned in by Dodgers centerfielder Wayne Newcombe, who robbed Bob Weitz of a sure hit with a diving backhanded stab of a sinking liner.
