Dodgers vs. Peppers

The day started with news worse than a rain-out. The Watervliet field has been shut down by the governor until further notice. I was afraid that losing such a beautiful field would be the proverbial straw that breaks the 2020 season's back. But, thanks to the combined efforts of John Reel and Jim Bonaparte along with the flexibility of 26 players from the Dodgers and Peppers, we were able to play some nighttime baseball at the Rotterdam Babe Ruth field.

The game got off to a precarious start for the boys in blue. Hustle base-running by Frear and Chichster plated a run for the Peppers in the top of the first. After the first two batters for the Dodgers grounded out, it felt like the morning gloom had followed us to Rotterdam. Fortunately, our luck changed and the next seven Dodgers reached base safely and five of us crossed the plate. Dodgers' #11 batter, Joe Kosek, led off the 2nd inning with a rip over 3rd base and the merry-go-round started again. The Peppers continued to hustle on the bases and put up two more runs in the middle innings. The Dodgers offense came back to life in the bottom of the 5th as Kocienski, Kosek and lead-off hitter Staulters started the inning with consecutive singles to plate the deciding run.

Thanks again to John Reel, Bones and everyone who will be scrambling to find new fields for the games scheduled at Watervliet. A thought about the Rotterdam field. I would love to see the CDMSBL work out an arrangement with a league like Rotterdam Babe Ruth where we would invest some up-front money to upgrade their field - a new mound, infield dirt & conditioner, better lighting - in exchange for a long-term agreement for field access. Both groups would benefit.

Other than that, it was great to get a game in and hang out with the Peppers and the

Thanks to the Dodgers for a good game. So nice to be back out playing baseball. I agree with Don about the field, it has great potential.Since Watervliet HS is no longer available for games. Dave
