55 Twins-Angels In A Nail Biter

At New Scotland the temperature registered 98 degrees at game time and both teams were sweating pretty good before the first pitch was thrown. The Twins came up first and scored 3 runs as John Newman knocked in Lee Madsen with a double and Rick Saidenberg homered to right off Angels hard throwing starter Bob Bolt making it 3-0 . In the bottom of the first the Angels started their scoring when Tom Maney, who reached on an error, scored as the Twins executed a double play. The Angels scored 3 times in the third banging out 2 singles (McQuade and Hinman) and a double (Poleto) while benefiting from 2 Twins errors to go up 4-3. Top of the 4th had Twins Tom King hitting a double and scoring on a Terry McCarthy single to tie it up 4-4 then go ahead 6-4 in the fifth as Edelman (single) and Koutsakis scored as a result of a couple of Angels infield errors. In the bottom of the fifth the Angels produced another run via singles by McQuade, Poleto, and Gadomski off Twins starter Wayne Nicholsen tightening it yet again at 6-5 Twins. Back come the Twins in the top of the sixth scoring 2 more as Nicholsen drove Greg Briscoe home with an opposite field triple and later scored on a passed ball. It stayed 8-5 Twins until the bottom of the 7th. Up came the Angels who quickly loaded the bases with no outs on a single and 2 walks . The call was made to bring in John Newman to relieve an exhausted Wayne Nicholsen who was running on fumes. Newman was working with 2 days rest after earning a complete game win against the Whiz Kids on Friday. Next batter for the Angels was Martin who lifted what appeared to be a very catchable fly to center that popped out of the glove of the usually very reliable McCarthy giving the Angels a run and leaving the bases loaded. Jim Wing lays down a sacrifice bunt to plate Hinman making it 8-7 with one out and runners on second and third. Newman bears down and strikes out leadoff hitter Tom Maney swinging. Two outs. Up comes John Reel who has been swinging the bat very well lately. Fly ball to fairly deep center that Terry McCarthy puts away this time. Game over. Twins prevail 8-7. Both teams were a bit shaky in the field. 5 errors by the Twins and 4 by the Angels. Ill blame it on the heat. Lots of hits, Angels with 11 and Twins with 9. Bob Bolt is a very good pitcher and the Angels are a strong hitting team. They easily have the potential to beat any team in the league.
