55 Twins pitcher Wayne Nicholsen threw a complete game shutout to earn a 2-0 win against a tough Dodgers team at A Diamond Thursday evening. The Twins took the lead in the bottom of the first scoring the only runs of the game on 2 hits and 2 Dodger errors. Both runs were unearned off starter Marc Denicola. The Twins would get just 2 more hits the rest of the game but made the lead hold up backing Nicholsen with a strong defensive performance. 4 Dodgers who reached first got as far as second via stolen bases but that was it. The Dodgers managed 5 singles against Nicholsen while the Twins had just 4 hits against 3 Dodger pitchers . Nicholsen recorded 4 strikeouts while issuing 1 walk and improved his season record to 7-1. The three Dodgers pitchers, Denicola, Coletta, and Miller combined to limit the Twins to 4 hits, no walks, and got 1 strikeout.
CDMSBL league has a Bill Jones award, given to the outstanding pitcher in each league. Bill was a good ballplayer, a fine man a significant member of our community, and a joy to be on the diamond with. I cannot speak conclusively about the other pitchers in the league, but I know Bill would be proud of Wayne and his season, and especially happy to have his name used to recognize Wayne. For those who don't know, he makes a difference for teams in national tournaments and has been on a number of national tournament champions. We are lucky to have Wayne in the league.
Nice thought Jim. Wayne is just shy of 69 and in the 9 years weve been teammates, from the Hawks to the Twins, hes having his best season this year. Hes the heart and soul of our team bringing much more than his amazing competitiveness. A wonderful friend to all who know him. Truly a league treasure.
