The Damn Yankees used a 6 hit, 5 run inning to get past the 1st place Cubs last night at New Scotland.
The Yankees got two runs in the bottom of the first on a leadoff double from Joe Careccia, a RBI single by Mark Marshal, and singles
by Paul Post and Tim Brown.

The Cubs would cut the lead in half in the top of the 4th inning. Paul Miles led off with a single and a stolen base. Ron Massaroni followed up with a walk.
Two fly outs later, Jerry Rosen came through with a two out RBI double. Massaroni tried to score the tying run on the play, but a perfect 8-6-2 relay nailed
him at the plate for the last out of the inning.

The Cubs would pull even in the next inning when Dave Mitchell led off with a single and Andy Hoyle followed with a walk. After a routine fly ball to left center,
Jim Bonaparte singled to load the bases with one out. Dave Schillinger delivered the run with a long sacrifice fly to left center. The game went to the bottom
of the 5th tied at 2.

That was where the game would be decided. Paul Cerone was hit by a 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning and stole second. A ground out to first moved Cerone to third.
Marshall doubled and Jack Griffin tripled to give the Yanks a two run lead. The lead blossomed to 5 when the next 3 hitters Paul Post, Tim Brown, and Doug Edict all
hit the ball where nobody was playing. None of the hits would be considered hard hit balls, but all three found empty real estate, and the Yankees enjoyed a 5 run lead.

The Cubs were only able to manage one more run in the top of the 7th on Jerry Rosen's second double of the game and a two out RBI single by Mike Girard. John Atwell
was the complete game victor, giving up just 3 earned runs, scattering 10 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 1. It was a great effort on a sweltering night.

The Cubs drop to 10-1-1 with the loss and fall into second place, behind the Whiz Kids. The Giants are still in third place but improve to 9-2 with the victory.
These two team are likely to see each other at some point in the playoffs, and with each team winning one game each in the regular season, it is likely to be a great series.
