For six innings, it was the best of times for the 62s Yankees, and the worst of times for the shorthanded Cardinals.
The defending champion Yankees were beating the Dickens out of the Cards through the first six innings, 9-0. But they had to survive an unexpected 8-run rally in the top of the seventh to hold off last year's league champion runner-ups for a narrow 9-8 win Monday at New Scotland Park.
Pete Geannelis was cruising with a one-hitter and had only allowed three runners through six innings, but the wheels fell off in the top of the seventh after getting the first out. With the sun setting and the wind howling, the Cardinals sent 13 men to the plate in the seventh -- the only inning where more than five runs can be scored in a 62s game. Some timely hitting sandwiched between several walks made for an interesting finish. Paul Post came in to get the final two outs as a forceout at second, with two men on, ended the strange game.
Meanwhile, the Yankees were cruising with a 4-0 lead when they plated five runs -- without making an out -- to take what seemed to be a commanding 9-0 lead in the fifth. Geannelis aided his own cause with a couple of hits, including a booming double.
Just another typical barnburner between the Yanks and Cards.
