A Wild One at New Scotland, with the Pirates Tangling Up with the Arachnids

Monday 8/1, New Scotland, NY - As the calendar turned to the true dog days of summer, the Arachnids and Pirates squared off in a Last Man Standing contest at New Scotland on Monday nite. These two teams historically have closely contested games with the outcome in the balance in the final At-Bats, and Monday was no different.

The home team Spiders sent Stefan Koustakis to the hill, and the Pirates countered with Rick Knipper.
Pirates had added incentive as Art "Methuselah" Gianakos, was celebrating his 75th turn around the big blue marble, and the Bucs wanted to gift him with a WIN!

A clutch 2-run single with 2 outs, by Jim Ansel got the Pirates on the board in the top of 1st. Arachnids answered right back with a 4-spot, sending 8 men to the plate, with key rbi knocks by Darrell Duncan and Don Wixon. Pirates cut the deficit to 1-run, on hustling single and stolen pillow by EJ Seney, followed by Howard Becker, ,just back from IL, with a bingle. Knipper settled in with a 1-2-3 2nd, high-lited by a Paul Peters over the shoulder grab, the first of a couple of sparklers on the nite. Trading blows like a couple of heavy-weights, The Pirates grabbed a 3-run lead in the 3rd with hot hitting Cos DiBari getting it started, followed by a Jim Jasiewicz single, and plated by a Peters rbi-single, and followed by another Ansel rbi, in front of a 2-run single by Jim Denney. Koustakis then beared down and came back with 2 scoreless, as Knipper had some command issues, and the Arachnids lit up the scoreboard. 2-run doubles by Tom King and Dave Plew in between a couple of free passes got the advantage back at 8-7, in favor of the Web Slingers. In the fifth, Koustakis with his 2nd of 3 hits on the nite ignited a big inning, as John Reel, Jim Wing and King laced rbi knocks against a gutty effort by Knipper with his longest outing of the season. A crooked number of 5, had the Pirates walking the plank, and down 13-7, and running out of at bats. Ansel came on to steady the ship with a scoreless, no hit frame. The Arachnids then spelled Koustakis after 5 solid innings turning the ball over to Duncan. The Pirates instead of folding like an accordion, responded in a big way as Knipper, Ansel and Denney each got their 2nd hits' each of the game, to set the table. After an rbi FC by Seney, the 9- 12 spots in the order took over with consecutive ribbys to close with in a run at 13-12. Pirates went to the bullpen, with Jimmie Dalton, who allowed a lead off single to Duncan, who scored an unearned tally, which was good enough to push the Spiders lead to a 2-run bulge at 14-12. Top of the the 7th and the no quit Bucs were not done. With Duncan facing the top of the order, he got a quick out on a punch out. Down to their last two outs, Kenny Shaw ripped a double down the line for his 2nd hit, and came around on a Peters single. After a fly out for the 2nd out, Doc Ansel did it again, with a hard single over short scoring Peters, and hard earned 14-14 tie game. With darkness settling in, the Bucs were counting on the short, fat, pus tossing righty to keep the Web Men off balance and off the board. Dalton got two quick fly outs to center and left, and the Pirates needed one out for a big comeback W. Spider Ed Draves worked a tough at-bat, and at 2-2, lined a clean single to give Arachnids a life. Leadoff man Koustakis was next and jumped on a ball up in the zone for a deep 2-bagger, giving the Arachnids, 2nd and 3rd and two outs. A quick conference between the Jims (Dalton, Ansel and Denney), made for a tough decision for the Pirates. Faced with the prospects of having to pitch to either Hall Of Famers Ralph Caputo or Duncan, the Pirates opted to not load them up, and go after Caputo, which Dalton willbe second guessing himself until the snow flies. Caputo, steely in his approach, jumped on the first pitch and hit a ball in the shortstop hole that Peters gloved, but had no play, as Draves sprinted home with the winner!

Arachnids 15 Pirates 14. A wild one, but a great one all the way around! This is why these boys still play the game!

LP - J. Dalton

Pirates - Ansel 3-3, 4 rbi; Peters 2-4, 3 runs; DiBari 1-2, rbi. The Ageless One, Art G 2-3, and rbi on a nice birthday present to himself!
