Pirates Outlast the Americans 14-10

Friday 8/5, (B-Diamond, Schenectady) On a sauna-like evening, the Pirates outlasted
the Americans, 14-10, in a tilt shortened by darkness.

The Pirates advantaged a late line-up change against Americans crafty righty, Vinnie Koster.
Rick Knipper was elevated to the lead-off spot, when usual igniter Dom Carnibucci got hung up,
getting to the big B-Diamond ball orchard. Knipper took a free stroll and grabbed the 2B pillow.
Jim Ansel and Paul Peters were victimized by bad luck and great plays, getting erased on a 1-6-3, and a Mark Finelli web-gem (the 1st of several on the nite) on a sinking liner that has two bases written all over it. Carnibucci working out of the 4-hole then laced a single, (the first of 3 hits for the port side swinger) scoring Knipper. Bucs tacked on in the second on a Ken Shaw knock, and Artie Gianakos (the target of much trade speculation) ripped a single to make it 2-0 in favor of the Black and Gold.

Pirates south-winder Eric Westfall, hung a couple of zeros, working out of a minor jam. Pirates went back to work in the 3rd, as Koster fought some control issues, and maybe the heat as factor, with a couple of free passes sandwiched around another Dom C. bingle. Finelli was back to his thievery, this time pilfering a Ray Meandro drive to secure the 2nd out, and the Americans called on Dave Plew. Location and command eluded Plew, with a couple more walks, before a Bill Reagan ribby single, and then again, the Ageless Gianakos, with a 2-rbi rap, that ended the frame as he came up short of a stretch double, but built the lead to 7-0, Buccos. The Amerks quickly answered back with a Dave Paige single (the 2nd of a 3-hit nite), a Koster rbi, a Finelli 2-Bagger, and a Dan Durback single to close to 7-4.
Singles by Ansel, Carnibucci, and Jim Denney (rbi), and after two tough luck outs in his 1st two ABs, a hard Ray Meandro ribby single made it 9-4 after 3 and 1/2 innings. Westfall got paper cut and nicked for 2 unearned in the bottom of the stanza, and it would be game on at 9-6.

Plew yielded to Durback who had an effective, scoreless 5th, setting the Swashbuckler down in order while notching a punch out. Durback's good twirling seemed to jump start the Red/White & Blue gang, as they used a Tony Mogavero double, and base-hits by Plew and Ben Petrone, a free pass, an Ed Potash knock and Koster hit to tie things up at 9, and threatening for more. Westfall toughed out the frame getting a "K", and two infield pop-ups to thwart further damage.

With a little overcast, and waning daylight, the Pirates rallied around another Ansel rip, a couple of uncharacteristic Durback freebies, and a couple of errors; followed by Shaw closing out a perfect nite with another hit, and a 5-spot on the board as a result.

The Pirates decided to change the look in the 6th. Westfall gave the Pirates a great outing on a very tough nite with the heat and humidity, and turned the ball over to Jimmie Dalton. The umpire crew of Mike LaDuke and Larry Banta (great job by both all nite) convened with Mike LaBarge and Dalton to say that it would be the final raps for the Americans, as darkness approached. Dalton worked around a lead off hit by Labarge who flipped a flair in back of 3B, that Shaw gave a great, back to the infield effort on, only to have it fall out of his glove, with LaBarge reaching safely. Dalton got two outs before a Petrone knock, and then getting a comebacker for the final out and seal the deal!

Pirates move into sole possession of the 6th seed for the playoffs, with a couple of key match-ups on
the upcoming schedule.
