Whiz win Championship


GAME #1
The Dodgers and Whiz met on Tuesday evening at Rogowicz field for the 1st game for the Championship. Pitching for the Dodgers was Jim Tesereiro. Joe Burns pitched for the Whiz. The Whiz got things going in the bottom of the 1st. Dave Sirani reached on a base hit, Shawn Martin and Gene Hallenbeck reached on consecutive walks to load the bases with 1 out. Mike Kane hit an RBI single. Tesereiro got out of the jam though with a pop out to the pitcher and a ground out to 3rd. The Whiz added another in the 2nd. John Rigos was hit by a pitch, with 2 outs, Bob Holmes had a base hit. Sirani hit an RBI single. The Whiz added 3 more in the bottom of the 3rd. Martin led off the inning with a base hit, then 2 fielding errors loaded the bases. Tesereio got the next 2 outs, a pop out to the pitcher, followed by a grounder to the pitcher, which scored a run, Pete Geannelis hit a ball over the right fielders head which scored 2 more runs. The right fielder recovered the ball quickly and was able to throw Geannelis stretching the base hit for the 3rd out. The Dodgers scored a run in the top of the 4th. With 1 out Ray Coletta hit a single. Pat Alston hit a bomb off of the left field fence. Jim Bradley hit an RBI single. Burns got the next 2 batters to get out of the jam. The Whiz scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 4th. Greg Mangione led off the inning with a BB and proceeded to steal second. Holmes laid down a sac bunt moving Mangione to 3rd. Sirani laid down a bunt, scoring Mangione and reaching 1B safely. Burns and Martin hit consecutive singles followed by a 2 RBI double by Hallenbeck. The Whiz added 1 more run in the bottom of the 5th. Bob Bolt had a base hit, then stole second. Rigos hit a single which scored Bolt. Tesereiro and Ball combined for 2K, 5 BB and 1 HBP. Burns had 6 K, 1 BB and 2 HBP. The Whiz take game one 9-1

GAME #2
The Dodgers and Whiz played game 2 on Thursday evening at Watervliet HS. Pitching for the Whiz was Bob Bolt, for the Dodgers it was John Weber. The Whiz scored 1 run in the top of the 2nd inning. Gene Hallenbeck reached on an error, stole second base and scored when Jeff Friedman hit a double over the left fielders head. The Whiz scored 3 more in the top of the 3rd. Greg Mangione reached on a walk, followed by consecutive singles by Dave Sirani (RBI) and Joe Burns. Hallenbeck had an RBI single followed by Mike Kane with an RBI single. The Dodgers got right back into it, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Harold Staulters reached on a fielder choice, followed by Dennis Lane reaching on a fielder choice as well, with Staulters scoring. Ray Coletta reached on a single followed by a single by Jim Bradley that scored Lane. Score after 3 innings, Whiz 5, Dodgers 2. The Whiz added a run in the top of the 5th. Burns reached on a base hit, stole 2nd and scored on a Bob Bolt base hit. The Whiz added 2 more in the top of the 6th. Kane led off the inning with a double. A sac fly to right by Paul Graziano moved Kane to 3rd, followed by a sac fly to left by Jeff Friedman that scored Kane. Consecutive singles by John Rigos, Pete Geannelis and Greg Mangione scored the final run for the Whiz. The Dodgers threatened in the bottom of the 7th. Weber reached base on a walk. With 1 out, John Kosek reached on an error, giving the Dodgers runners on 1st and 2nd. Staulters hit a fielder choice, leaving runners on 1 and 3rd with 2 outs. Marc Trinchillo had an RBI single that scored Weber. Bolt was able to get the final out on a grounder to 2nd. Bolt had 6 K and 2 BB. Weber and Tesereiro combined for 4 K´s and 2 BB. Final score Whiz 8, Dodgers 3.

Congratulations to the Whiz Kids - a talented team with a very high baseball IQ. It was a pleasure to share the field and the Black Bear Saloon with the champions.

A truly dominant season by the Whiz, and a great stretch run by the improved Dodgers. Hats off to both clubs for outstanding seasons.
