There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help put a long winter in the rear-view mirror, and to soothe the disappointment of three straight game rainouts to open another season of playing ball.

I got my fix tonight watching Moneyball (yet again). There is a scene early in the movie where high school graduate Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) is sitting at the kitchen table with his parents as two major league baseball scouts are offering him a sizeable bonus to sign with the New York Mets to be their future star centerfielder. His Mom informs the two scouts that her son has received a full scholarship to attend Stanford in the fall. They tell the parents that Billy has to choose between making baseball his career, or going to college; that he can't do both. The scout tells Billy:

''We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't... don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told''

For the short list of us guys over 60 playing in the CDMSBL, we're still waiting for that voice to tell us it's time. In the meantime, there's the greatest game ever invented waiting to be played this summer.
