The 45 Cubs outlasted a very game Royals team 6-3 in 10 innings on Saturday on a beautiful day in Chatham. The Royals' Todd Freidman and the Cubs' Chris Dunn both went the distance. The Royals scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning and the Cubs then tied it in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning the Royals scored two more runs to take a 3-1 lead but would not score again. The Cubs scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force extras and then scored three big runs in the top of the 10th to seal the win.
The story of this game was not so much about the outcome but more about men that embody what our league is all about. Brad Buchan is the leader of the Royals and in his mid-seventies is still Managing and playing in our 45 Division. Brad is also coming back from major surgery and on Saturday was left with only eight players due to Graduations, HS Sectionals, work schedules and a very last-minute cancelation. So Brad being Brad grabbed his glove and played first base, batted eighth and almost pulled off an amazing win for his team. He also reached base safely twice and contributed a sacrifice bunt. Of course, he also was the first to the park preparing the field and as we enjoyed a cold one after the game, Brad is on his tractor dragging the field and making sure it is ready for the next game. Our league is what it is because of guys like Brad and we are very grateful to share the field with him. Good Luck to Brad and the Royals the rest of the way!

Not surprising, Mac. There's no questioning Brad's character, but his competitive edge and love of the game will never wane. He was a stud player back in the day. It's nice you recognized his efforts. jk
To put it in perspective, imagine somebody in their mid-90s playing in the 62s Division. Brad is one of the true gentlemen of the league, and a great ambassador for the CDMSBL. Hes in it for the love of the game, and its great to see that his competitive fire is still burning.
