On a beautiful night for baseball at New Scotland on Tuesday night, The Cubs bested up the Twins 13-3. The Cubs pushed 13 runs across on 15 hits and two walks, in just 4 innings. Now, probably half of those hits were "well placed -- not on the barrel" hits, if you know what I mean. Jeff Whitehead (Twins starter) was very unlucky, as he hit quite a few Cubs' bats either on the hands or off the end, but the ball still found safe landing spots. As a pitcher, it was tough to watch, because Jeff is one of the nicest guys that you will ever meet. Oh well, that is just the way it goes some times. I tip my cap to Jeff, as he took it all with a smile. That is hard to do.
Mike Girard led the way for the Cubs with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Paul Miles, Dan Hernandez, Ron Lochner, Jim McQuade, and Alex Marin all added two hits each. Charlie Freer, Jeff Whitehead, Rick Seidenberg, Jim Tino, Terry McCarthy, and Joe Parker all had hits for the Twins.
Girard scattered 7 hits over his 5 innings, while walking none and striking out 3, to improve his record on the mound to 4-0. The Cubs move to 5-0, and remain atop the league's standings with a big game on tap for next week, with the defending champion Whiz Kids. That game is scheduled for 6:00 pm, on Tuesday, June 6th, at Watervliet High School. It should be a good one.
