Gene Hallenbeck had to make the call whether or not to send players to Watervliet High School to play the second regular season meeting between the Whiz Kids and the Cubs. He was hesitant to cancel, but the combo of the dirty air and an iffy weather forecast helped Gene make the right call. The game was cancelled at 4:30 pm and the players were notified.
As I was sitting on my couch grumbling about not being able to play the game, the skies opened up and hail and rain came down in torrents. If Gene had given the green light at 4:30 pm, the only thing that would have been accomplished would have been 24-25 players driving home in their vehicles, soaking wet. There will be a better day to play this great game.
