The Dodgers and Americans squared off on a beautiful night at a beautiful field to play some baseball. We played a close game but the baseball wasn't exactly beautiful.
The Dodgers scored two runs in the top of the first thanks to a few miscues on the left side of the infield. There was an opportunity to score more but we left two runners on base.
The Americans started the bottom of 1st with a hit and a HBP and then got screwed on an infield fly rule call by the home plate umpire. TJ Scorsone lifted a high pop fly that was clearly headed to center field. Dodgers SS, 2B and CF (all 55 or older) gave chase. The ball landed at least 10 yards in the outfield and 5 yards from the nearest Dodger. Should have been bases loaded with no outs instead of 2nd and 3rd with one out. The Americans were limited to one run in the frame.
The Dodgers were able to push across a run in the top of the 2nd but popped out to the pitcher with two outs and the bases loaded.
The Americans threatened in the bottom of the 3rd by loading the bases with no outs. How many runs did they score? Zero. A comebacker to Jimmy T forced the runner at home. A strikeout and a groundout ended the frame. The Dodgers returned the favor in the 4th by grounding out with the bases loaded.
The at'em balls. With a run across and a runner on 2B, Pat Alston drilled a line drive to 3B. The exit velo was approximately 150 MPH. Right into the palm of Ralph Caputo's glove. The rightfielder heard the pop. Christ, the gas station attendant down the street put in a call for shots fired! Inning over.
Dan Durbak hit a slightly softer drive to 3B the following inning and he was out before leaving the batters box. Two bullets with nothing to show for them.
Aside from that, it was a well played and well pitched game. The game ended with the tying run for the Americans striking out with two runners on in the bottom of the 7th. Final score, 5 - 2 Dodgers.
