The 9-1 Arachnids entertained the 12-0 Yankees at Watervliet High School on the last evening of July. Beautiful weather graced the venue, a rare commodity this summer. Yankees went down 1-2-3 in the first with their inning ending on a double play. Spiders get 3 quick runs in the bottom of the 1st on via hits from Stefan Koutsakis, Darrell Duncan, Lee Madsen, a walk to Kenny Wellington, and Jimmy Wing reaching on an infield error. 3-0 after 1 full, Arachnids. Yankees scored 1 in the top of the second but the Spiders escaped further damage by executing a 1-6-3 double play to avoid more trouble. Quiet until top of the 4th when Ron Smaka leads off with a walk, takes second on a 4-3 fielders choice and scores on a Poleto single. 3-2 Arachnids. The game moved efficiently forward until the top of the 6th. Knock-Knock ! Whos there ? The 12-0 Yankees. Were comin in. Tony Nardacci singles with one out, steals second, advances to 3rd on a 5-3 fielders choice and scores on a Smaka single. Smaka thrown out attempting to steal 2nd by Wing to end the inning. Game tied 3-3. Spiders had a shot in the bottom of the inning with runners on early but the Yankees threw a wet blanket over things with a double play of their own. Yankees work to manufacture the go ahead run in the top of the 7th. Poleto walks with 1 out, steals second after Maddow flies out, and attempts to score on a single to left by Steve Van Gelder but was thrown out when Spider left fielder Lee Madsen relays to Darrel Duncan who makes a great throw home to Wing who tags Poleto out to end the threat. Bottom of the 7th game still tied 3-3. TJ Scorsone leads off and hits the first pitch over the left fielders head for a clean double. Madsen moves Scorsone to third with a bunt. Jim Wing takes first as he was hit by a pitch, the 3rd HBP of the game for Yankees starting pitcher Miller who was required by rule to vacate the mound as that was his 3rd hit batter of the game. Wayne Nicholsen, coming back fron a mini stroke, hits a slow roller the short and Scorsone scores the winning run to end the game, 4-3 Arachnids. Duncan pitched the first 3 for the Arachnids and Scorsone the final 4 getting the win. Miller pitched effectively for 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees. Spider Don Wixon had the only multiple hit game of the night in the game going 2-2. The Arachnids are now 10-1 while the Yankees remain in first at 12-1.
