Damn Yankees v Whiz

Damn Yankees and the the Whiz met at Watervliet. The field was in great shape due to the work of Dennis Lane. As always thanks to Dennis for the work that he does on the field on behalf of our league. Starting pitchers were Lex Herrlett for the Yankees, with Bob Bolt and Jeff Friedman sharing duties for the Whiz. The Yankees set the stage early. Top of the 1st saw Herrlett, Mark Marshall and Bob Altobelli all hit singles to load the bases. Joe Careccia hit a fielder choice to Mike Kane at 3rd base. Kane tagged the bag and threw home to get the runner, 2 outs runners at 2nd and 3rd. Bolt was able to strike out the next batter to get out of the jam. Things were quiet through the 2nd inning for both teams. Top of the 3rd saw Herrlett and Marshall single followed by an error on an Altobelli fly ball to load the bases. Doug Edick had an RBI single followed by a 2 RBI single from Pat Alston. Bottom of the 3rd saw Kane reach base on an error, stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on an outfield fly out then scored on a groundout by Greg Mangione. 4-1 Yankees after 3. Top of the 4th the Yankees added another run. Herrlett reached base on an error, stole 2nd and scored on an Altobelli base hit. Bottom of the 4th the Whiz had consecutive singles by Shawn Martin, Doug Reisinger and Gene Hallenbeck that scored Martin. Hallenbeck stole 2nd with Reisinger scoring on the throw down to second. Herrlett was able to get out of the jam. The next batter grounded out and the next 2 batters struck out. 5-3 Yankees after 4. Bottom of the 5th with 2 outs saw Jim Hicks hit a single and score on a single by Mangione. 5-4 after 5 innings. Whiz had a chance in the 6th to put some runs on the board. With 1 out Martin walked but was picked off of 1st by Herrlett. That proved costly as Reisinger hit a double to the left center field gap. Top of the 7th saw the Yankees with an oppurtunity to score. Careccia hit a single and stole 2nd. Edick hit a single moving Careccia to 3rd. Edick proceeded to steal 2nd giving the Yankees runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Doug Duell hit a fly ball to Bolt in right field (1 out), Bolt threw the ball home to get Careccia out (2 outs), Jan Friedman threw the ball to Kane at 3rd to get Edick out. *****TRIPLE PLAY***** Bottom of the 7th saw the Whiz threaten again. Bolt lead off the inning with a single. Herrlett was able to get Bolt out on his 2nd pickoff of the game. Jan Friedman reached base on a single. Dave Sirani hit a scorcher back to the mound that Herrlett was able to snag for the 2nd out and he was able to double up Friedman at 1st base. Damn Yankees win 5-4

Not enough can be said about the work that Dennis lane puts into getting this field ready for play. We are not talking for his team he plays on but for all teams. Takes time out of his day to prepare the field and not for nothing sometimes since the rain will just before game time and the game is a wash! Hats off to Lane much appreciation for your hard work and effort.
