Cubs Dominate in the championship game, 14-2. The Cubs scored 4 runs in the first 4 innings and Steve Lounello pitched a no-hitter through 5-1/3 innings. The runs came in the 2nd (1 run) and 3rd innings (3 runs). The first run came in the 2nd inning on a lead-off single by Dave Mitchell, and a single by Pete Geanellis. A beautiful sacrifice bunt by PJ Martone moved the runners up. Tim Brown plated the run on a sacrifice. The Cubs pushed the lead to 4-0, with three runs in the 3rd. Bolt started the rally with a lead-off walk. Martin singled and Rosen hit a 2-RBI double. Mike Girard followed with a single, and Paul Cerrone drove in the run on a RBI groundout, and the score was 4-0.
The bottom of the 4th saw the previously undefeated Aurora Islanders score one run. Two walks, a hit batter, and a RBI groundout provided the run with out a single hit. The score was 4-1 entering the 5th inning.
The Cubs plated 3 more runs in the top of the 5th on singles by Girard and Geanellis. The last run of the inning scored on an Islanders error. Mike Girard came on in relief of Lounello with one out and the bases loaded, in the 6th inning. He got a strikeout and a comebacker to end the threat. The Cubs would get one more run in the 7th, and 6 in the 9th. Girard and Martone had the key hits in the 7th. Mitchell, Jim McQuade, and Girard had the key hits in the final inning rally.
The final score was 14-2 and the Cubs celebrated a very lopsided victory and maybe the most successful post season run in CDMSBL history. The Cubs outscored their opponents 62-12 in their 4 playoff games. That is what I would call dominant! The Cubs celebrated into the night.
I will provide a more in depth analysis of the run to the title, after I get back from Florida. For now, I need some sleep!
